The best out of print board games to have fun at home

Playing at home

Playing board games is one of the simplest pleasures you can have with your friends and family at home. Board games are often played with two or more players and include various components such as dice, cards, and, of course, a board. It is a great way to spend your time at home while having fun, learning, and, perhaps, also saving some money as you don’t have to go out. The question is which board games are the best for your group? While each year sees thousands of board games getting released, there are also times when a board game becomes out of print. While these editions are no longer being printed or reprinted by their publisher, the best out of print board games remain a favorite in any household’s board game rotation.

A lot of amazing games have been out of print for a while. It is not because it is not a great game, it is just that the publisher has decided to stop its production in the meantime. Sometimes they could come back, but even if these editions might not be available for sale directly from the publisher, there are still chances that you may find a certain board game from a certain year or print online. Which out of print board games are the best ones to play at home? At Asmodee, we have some ideas!

Out of print strategic classics

A game of speed and strategy, 7 Wonders Duel is an out of print board game about civilizations fighting it out—whether through scientific, structural, or military development—to the top. Somewhat similar to the game Big Brother, two players basically go head-to-head to develop and advance their civilization over three ages. The players must construct buildings and create new wonders of the world, strengthen their armies, and make scientific discoveries. A joint display of cards and a direct confrontation decide between victory and defeat in this game. While it’s only a game for two, the others of course can join, advise, watch, and cheer.

Created to be played by two to four players, Carcassonne is a classic tile-placement board game in which the players must develop their medieval landscape. The landscapes are built up with roads, fields, terrains, and cities that all come in the form of a tile, which the players have drawn up. They then need to station meeples (or followers) such as farmers, knights, and thieves. Each meeple is equivalent to a point, and when the last tile is drawn, the player with the most point wins. The original Carcassonne game has now been out of print, but because of its popularity, it has also produced many spin-offs such as (but not limited to) Carcassonne Amazon, Carcassonne Junior, and Carcassonne Safari, which are all available at Asmodee.

Meanwhile, A game combining intrigue and strategy with scheming characters, Citadels is a fun-filled game we definitely recommend playing at home with your friends and family. A classic game by Bruno Faidutti, which is sadly now considered out of print, it is a game played by a minimum of two to a maximum of eight players who must all draft characters and use their smarts to develop a groundbreaking city with a thriving economy. For anyone who is feeling nostalgic, you can find new editions featuring new characters and districts that should include all the contents. It’s truly a fun and timeless game, and while the original is out of print, the new editions with new designs and added features are definitely worth buying, too.

Another one of our favorite top print and play board games is a French card game by Jean-Louis Roubira and published by Libellud. Called Dixit, it is a game for a group who wants to have their imaginations go wild! The way it works is that someone needs to take the role of narrator for each round. Holding six cards, the players need to think of an apt statement about one of the six cards they hold in their hands. Depending on what has been given by the narrator, the other players must then choose which card in their hand is the one that best fits it. The beauty is not only in the fun but also in the design, which has been illustrated by Marie Cardouat.
